 Dear Secretary-General: Human Rights Watch was concerned to learn that Ibrahim Gambari, the joint African Union-United Nations special representative, attended the wedding ceremony of Chad’s President Idriss Deby on January 20, 2012 in Khartoum, in the presence of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Flew in Dolce and Gabbana… On January 1, 2012, the PPRA, a subsidiary of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), which regulates the price of petroleum products in Nigeria, announced that starting from that day the cost of fuel will go from N65 per litre to N141.

Despite unusual feat recorded by its members of staff who averted what would have been another deadly bomb attack by arresting a lady carrying explosives to be planted in the vicinity of the Federal Capital Territory administration (FCTA) headquarters in Area 11, Abuja, the FCT administration has sacked the private security company, Encouragers Security Company Limited whose staff apprehended the suspected bomber.

Even though the last protests on the removal of “oil Subsidy” did not succeed in forcing government to revert the petrol pump price to the prevailing N65.00 before January 1st this year, some lessons cannot be taken away as a filtrate of the upheaval. Firstly, Nigerians would have, in clear terms, sensed the sense and mentality of some of the people who decide their fate and consequently who their rulers, as against their leaders, are.
